The runways may show all the fashion, hair, and makeup possibilities but let’s face it, not all those looks work in real life. Instead, look to celebrities for the most flattering and trendy looks! You might not be ready to try one of the ultra low cut or lace-over-granny-panties dresses but the hairstyles are all wearable. Check out these pictures of celebrity hairstyles 2014 for 10 trends to try this year!
1. Short to Medium Length Hairstyles
In order of length and simplicity, let’s start off with short to medium length hair. Cutting hair short was the major hair trend of last year so now it’s all about updating those short styles and growing hair out. Katharine McPhee is wearing a modern bob for thick hair. Highlights from the cheekbones down add even more texture and definition to luscious locks.
2. Shoulder Length Blunt Hair
Simplicity is one of this year’s trends and with that comes beautiful, easy to wear haircuts. We have already sung the praises of shoulder length blunt cut hair for seeing this style on stars like Olivia Palermo makes us love it even more! Style it sleek and straight with a cream serum to elimate frizz and fly aways. You can also use waves to enhance volume and add texture like below.
3. Mermaid Waves
Rose McGowan always has the best hair, whether it’s perfectly polished or sexily tousled. She’s wearing one of our favorite looks of the year, mermaid waves. It’s an easy look to style, especially if our hair has some natural wave to it. If not, you can get the look by working a curl enhancing product like Oribe Curl Shaping Mousse through damp hair, braiding it in few sections, and letting it air dry. What a gorgeous look for summer or any time you want to try a new style.
4. Side Bangs
Bangs are always in style. Sometimes the trends lean towards heavier or blunt cut bangs but this is one of those times it’s all about what works for you, not what’s in style. Fortunately, this year the trend is side swept bangs, which work for everybody (and you can even cut them yourself). Katie Homes with her new fringe, which also helps to lighten up thick hair.
5. Ombre Hair Color
Hairstyles trends for 2014 aren’t just about cut and style but color! The biggest hair color trend of 2014 has been ombre highlights. Jennifer Garner‘s locks are dark on top and sun-kissed ends. They are beautiful, look so natural, and even better, none of those awkward roots. This is not a DIY look though so leave it to the professionals.
6. Messy Hair
In the spirit of easier hair, we love that so many looks are not about having every hair in place. Messy, tousled styles of all kinds are in! This is especially good news for ladies with thin or fine hair because messy hair boosts volume and thickness.
To get the Elizabeth Olsen‘s look, work a texturizing product like Bed Head Mega Whipped Marshmallow Hair Texturizer through the ends of hair. You can use a salt spray like Tigi Catwalk Session Series Salt Spray. Just spray it through damp hair, scrunch, and let it air dry.
7. Messy High Bun
Another way to wear messy hair is up in a high bun. It’s the perfect look in heat but is stylish enough for work, dates, and nights out on the town. Keep this style from looking like bed head by teasing hair to add volume at the crown like Clemence Poesy.
8. The Side Braid
Braids are still in for 2014, both sophisticated updos and simple braids like Blake Lively showed off at Cannes this year. The side braid is gorgeous for the red carpet or whatever fun you have planned for the weekend. For something a little bit different, try out your fishtail braiding skills to get Jennifer Morrison‘s lovely look. And if you’re not perfect yet, no problem. Messy is in!
9. Low Side Updos
Updos never go out of style but they do change year to year. Braids and messy are in and so are low updos worn to one side as seen on Cameron Diaz. These styles combine detail at the back and simplicity at the front, perfect for events when you want to look your best without worrying about your hairstyle. And note, dangly earrings are a must with this look.
10. The Headband
Hairstyles trends also come in the form of accessories and this year’s headbands are a must have for weddings, prom, or any special event you want to shine at. We love how these headbands are incorporated in hairstyles, up and down. Jenna Dewan-Tatum is gorgeous with a rhinestone headband that glimmers against her dark hair.
So that’s our round up of 2014 hairstyle trends as seen on some of our favorite celebrities! You can’t try them all but at least one of these should make an appearance this year because it’s never been easier to rock the latest hairstyles.
